VOID AUDIO EARBUDS
VOID Audio earbuds was an assignment in my third term of Interactive Media Design. We were tasked with designing and modelling a pair of earbuds, as well as creating promotional content for the brand and product.
SOFTWARE
PROCESS
For this project, I designed and 3D modelled a pair of earbuds, rendered promotional images, created a promotional video, and created a website for the imaginary brand VOID Audio.
Originally, I was going to do a real brand (Sony) doing a collaboration with Crypton Media, but decided that although I love Vocaloid, it would be niche. So, I pivoted to branding and design that would be appealing to a broad range of people.
The brand name VOID came to my mind because noise cancelling headphones make it so quiet, you can't hear anything around you, like being in a void or something. The original design had small "tails" because I'm personally not a fan of earbuds that are just round or flat. On the charging case, I wanted to include something to display the battery levels because I don't like having to check my phone to see where my Airpods are at. I also gave the case a clear lid so you can easily see the light, and if your earbuds are where they should be.
CHALLENGES
One of the challenges I encountered was deciding to get rid of the little tails on the earbuds. I modeled them, but I thought it looked strange. I had to go back and remodel a lot of parts of the earbuds to remove them and have a sleek final mesh.
Another challenge I had was with the renders for the x-ray slider on the website. I found the texture used to create the effect on the inner mechanisms of the earbuds really hard to get just right, I struggled to get the parts to be as bright or glow-y as I wanted.
Another challenge I had was the scrolling animation on the website. I encountered some spacing issues around the animation, that I mostly ironed out. I also don't love the very end of the animation/video with the person dancing. I was hoping it would be reminiscent of an old iPod commercial, but it looks a little silly and I ran out of time before the deadline to change it. If I could change one thing about this assignment I would definitely end with something different.
FINAL RESULT
Overall, I love how my earbuds and case models turned out. Modelling and texturing them was definitely my favourite part of this assignment, as well as animating them in C4D and creating the video. I like the transition from the battery ring to the audio visualizer. I also really like how my still renders turned out, especially the one for the black earbuds.
I enjoyed learning how to do new things for this assignment such as the scrolling animation, putting our model into a model viewer and implementing hotspots to display information on a hover, and the x-ray slider.
